If you think your friend is in trouble

Warning Signs

You care about your friends, and want to make sure that they are alive to know it. Watch for these warning signs if you think that they may be getting into behaviour that is violent and dangerous.

  1. Loss of temper on a daily basis and frequent fighting
  2. Vandalism or property damage
  3. Increased use of drugs or alcohol
  4. Exhibits more risk-taking behaviour
  5. Has detailed plans to commit violent acts
  6. Announces threats or plans to hurt others
  7. Starts to harm animals
  8. Begins carrying a weapon

If your friend is beginning to show these warning signs, they may be at risk of acting out violently. It is important that they receive help quickly, or it may be too late.

Do:

  1. Talk to them
  2. Encourage them to seek help
  3. Be confident and speak up about what your boundaries are
  4. Feel comfortable telling them that they are acting violently, or that they are putting themselves at risk by spending time with people that are violent

Don't

  1. Judge them
  2. Make them feel stupid
  3. Ask lots of questions
  4. Force them to make a decision
