Student filmmakers get moment in the spotlight

It was lights, camera, action this past Saturday at the Living Arts Centre as young filmmakers and movie aficionados checked out a student-driven film festival.
Speak Up! A Student Short Film & Video Fest was created to showcase films by high school, college and university students and to promote, celebrate and advance filmmaking in the city and surrounding areas.
Eighteen films, ranging in length from 20 seconds to 20 minutes, were screened. Mississauga filmmakers, including Morgan Muscat, were also featured at the festival.
Awards were presented in various categories.
Ryan Bauer's Hello Darling grabbed three awards Hear it Loud! Best Sound Track, Speak Up! Film of the Year and Speak Up! People's Choice. Bauer has studied film at University of Toronto and radio and television arts at Ryerson University.
Other winners were:
- Light & Frame Visionary Award - Brit Cruise's Escape
- Speak Up! Documentary Award - Pearl Ball-Harding's Keeping The Bees
- Make it Move! Animation Award - Eric Chen and Reebha Sharma's Evolution
- Speak Up! SFX Award - Josh Coulas and Matt Dorman's Duel
- High School Recognition Award - Jacob Corrigan's Discover Smoking
